Behind the atlas

A sense of place

An independent guide to the places, names and local histories of Ireland, across all thirty-two counties.

Start with a name

A name is often the first connection we have with a place. Placenames.ie brings together recorded Irish and English forms, geographic context and original research so that the next step is easier to take.

Explore a county, follow a name element or look for a townland mentioned in a family document. We keep different places separate, even when they share a name.

Built on published sources

The place-name foundation is Logainm, the Placenames Database of Ireland. Geographic boundaries use attributed OpenStreetMap and official mapping sources where available. Additional historical writing is cited on the page where it is used.

This is an independent project. It is not an official government service or a replacement for the source record.
