Places & family history

Use a well-identified place to connect family records, without losing the historical context.

Start with a document

A place written on a census return, certificate or family letter is a lead to investigate. Record the date, spelling and the person connected to it. A matching surname in the same county is not enough to establish a family relationship.

Keep census years separate

Where this atlas has a verified census match, it reports each available year separately. Surname frequencies describe the matched records for that year. A year without a verified match is left unavailable rather than recorded as a population of zero.

Return to the original record

Use summaries to decide what to inspect next, then check the original source. Look at household members, ages, addresses and other details together. Differences in boundaries and historical spellings can affect a place match, even when the name looks familiar.
