Place & story
The inn and the village
Samuel Lewis recorded Royaloak in 1837 as a village of 82 houses and 428 inhabitants in Killinane parish. He traced its name to an established inn which predated the village. The settlement stood beside a crossing of the Barrow, close to Bagenalstown. His account places the inn at the beginning of the village’s story, with the road and river crossing shaping its location. [2]
A change of horses
Royaloak was a stopping place for coaches travelling through County Carlow. Alan Doran’s study of the stage-coach routes describes the inn as a three-storey Georgian building and explains that horses were changed there, with Carlow and Kilkenny providing the neighbouring changes. The Dublin–Cork mail passed through Royaloak, carrying its passengers and guarded mail along a journey that took more than a day. [3]
Whiskey making at Clorusk Lower
Royal Oak Distillery at Clorusk Lower represents a later industry in the locality. It produces the three styles of Irish whiskey—pot still, malt and grain—using both pot and column stills. Its name continues the village’s association with the old inn, though the distillery is a separate establishment. [4] [2]
