Place & story

The post office in a closure survey

Johann Bergmann’s 2008–09 survey of Irish post offices lists Grousehall among the Cavan offices closed between 2006 and August 2008. He compiled the list from information supplied by Maurice Barrett, drawing on An Post records. The entry places Grousehall within a wider contraction of rural postal services, although the survey does not give its exact final opening day. [2]

Lough Acurry and the Laragh Anglers

Lough Acurry, also identified as Grousehall in Inland Fisheries Ireland’s guide, lies on the Cavan–Bailieborough road. The guide records its management by the Laragh Anglers and a brown-trout stock supplemented with hatchery-reared fish. Fishing took place from the bank, with summer evenings noted for sedge-fly activity. The account documents an established recreational use of the local lake without identifying it as a public park. People & connections

A barracks posting remembered in football

In a 2010 GAA oral-history interview, P. J. Reilly recalled Phil “The Gunner” Brady among the figures associated with Knockbride football. The interview’s detailed report specifically links Brady’s participation with his posting at Grousehall Barracks. It is a precise local association arising from work and sport, rather than evidence that Brady was born in Grousehall. The recollection connects the barracks with the surrounding community’s playing life. [4]
