Place & story

Building Saint Mary’s

Father Philip Donegan obtained a site at Kilconny from Lord Lanesborough after arriving in the parish in 1843. The ground provided space for both a new church and a cemetery for lower Drumlane. Work probably began in 1844 or 1845 and continued through the Famine years; the diocesan account notes that finishing work remained in 1853. [2]

The house opposite

The former parochial house opposite Saint Mary’s dates from about 1860. Its two-storey, three-bay form has a hipped slate roof, decorative sash windows and an entrance porch with triangular-headed recesses. The architectural inventory highlights the shared detailing between house and church and their relationship with the graveyard as a group serving the local community. [3]
