Place & story
A road through Tober
Cavan County Council’s 2020 conservation report describes an older route through Tober and onwards into Leitrim, passing north of Lough Allen. It connects Tober’s loss of trade and importance with the opening of Dowra’s new Shannon bridge in 1862, which shortened journeys towards Drumshanbo and Carrick-on-Shannon. The report presents transport change as an important part of the older village’s decline. [2]
The landslide account
An earlier council revitalisation study gives another account of Tober’s disappearance, reporting that the settlement was washed away by landslides in the summer of 1863. That is a modern historical summary. It does not name casualties or establish the scale of destruction, and those details should not be added to the story. [3]
A ringfort in Moneen
In Moneen, the townland containing Tober, archaeologist Michael Moore recorded a ringfort in 2022 from aerial imagery. The grass-covered enclosure is roughly thirty by twenty-five metres, with a low bank and an outer ditch. A tributary stream appears to have eroded its northern edge. The record credits Jean Charles Caillére with first reporting the site. [4]
