Place & story

Fairs outlast a weekly market

Lewis’s 1837 description places Johnstown Bridge in Cadamstown parish within Carbury barony. Its patent allowed a Monday market, but that weekly privilege had fallen out of use. Four annual fairs continued. The village also supported a dispensary through subscriptions and county grand-jury funds. These arrangements record a settlement whose commercial importance had changed while periodic trade and local services remained. [2]

A church announced by its tower

Saint Patrick’s at Johnstown Bridge dates from around 1830. Its Gothic design combines a stone nave with an entrance tower and a slender polygonal spire rising above a battlemented parapet. The architectural inventory records early plasterwork in the ceiling and chancel, alongside stained glass and carved memorials. Although set back from the road, the tower gives the church a prominent place in the village landscape. [3]

People & connections

Samuel Holt’s house at Newbury Crossroads

The Old Rectory at Carbury was erected by Samuel Holt and was standing by 1854. Its two storeys rise above a basement, with stone steps leading to a restrained entrance and fanlight. Inside, the inventory records timber door surrounds, shutters and other joinery. A coach house and stable formed part of its setting. The building later housed Church of Ireland clergy associated with Carbury parish. [4]
