Place & story
The enclosures of Boghtaduff
The 1998 Record of Monuments and Places lists several enclosures in Boghtaduff, the townland containing Brusna. Two are classified as cashels, while another is listed as a ringfort with an associated children’s burial ground. These are separate monuments rather than a single village fort. The survey’s numbered entries and mapped positions preserve evidence of earlier settlement and burial in the fields around the modern community, without establishing exact construction dates. [2]
The Sacred Heart church
Brusna’s Church of the Sacred Heart opened in 1950. A parish history circulated through the Diocese of Achonry places it among the four church areas of Castlemore and Kilcolman parish, alongside Ballaghaderreen, Derrinacartha and Monasteraden. The parish spans parts of Roscommon, Mayo and Sligo. Brusna’s church belongs to that wider network of rural congregations, while providing a local place of worship for the village. [3]
School projects and performance
The school’s own classroom archive records a lively mixture of practical and artistic work during the 2010s. Pupils constructed a willow dome beside a small woodland in December 2016. Earlier projects included model aircraft made after reading Grandpa’s Great Escape, a visit to a theatre production about Dublin tenement life, and a school production shortlisted for a Bord Gáis Energy drama award for its set. These dated records preserve examples of how the school combined outdoor learning, reading and performance. [4]
The Brusna Inn
The Brusna Inn opened in 1990 as a small rural pub and developed into a venue for music and community events. Its own account records support for Brusna Community Park and sponsorship of Ballaghaderreen GAA and Kilmovee Shamrocks ladies’ football. It has also hosted fundraising gatherings, linking entertainment with local voluntary activity. The inn adds a social meeting place to the village’s school and church, serving organisations whose membership extends beyond Brusna itself. [5]
