Place & story
Saint Anne’s chapel of ease
Saint Anne’s Church of Ireland church was built in 1833 as a chapel of ease linked to Saint Patrick’s outside Castlefinn. Its three-bay nave and western tower stand within a graveyard in the centre of Cross Roads. The interior preserves carved timber features and a memorial to parishioners who died in the First World War, alongside an encaustic tiled floor. [2]
Saint Patrick’s and its later spire
O’Neill and Byrne designed the Catholic Saint Patrick’s Church for Rev. Edward Boyle. Its foundation stone was laid on 12 April 1872, and the church was dedicated on 25 April 1875. The Irish Architectural Archive records a Gothic design with a high roof and quatrefoil clerestory openings. The belfry and spire were added in 1896; Edward J. Toye later sought tenders for improvements in 1903. [3]
