Place & story

Three schools brought together

The present Colmcille Naofa school opened in Rathcormac in 1975. It brought together the original village school, Lugnagall National School in Glencar and St Finian’s National School in Carney, all within Drumcliffe parish. The school’s own account locates it on the Bundoran road, north of Sligo, beside the village’s small public space. [2]

The name on road signs

In 2020 Sligo County Council debated the spelling used on road signs. Councillor Gilroy sought continued use of Rathcormac, pointing to local institutions’ usage. The council’s response noted that Ordnance Survey maps and the Placenames Commission used Rathcormack. The recorded discussion captures a difference between established community usage and the official form. [3]
