Place & story

Timbers uncovered in 1995

River-widening works on the Dargle exposed seventeen oak timbers in Killarney in January 1995. Conor McDermott’s investigation found that most had already been disturbed, although one timber remained embedded in the gravel. Many appeared split, but abrasion had removed any visible toolmarks. The arrangement suggested human activity without establishing it beyond doubt. [2]

An early date, an uncertain structure

The National Monuments Service subsequently reported a radiocarbon date of 4661–4360 BC from one timber. It retains the excavator’s uncertainty about whether the remains formed a structure at all. A landing place for log boats was suggested as a possible explanation. The date of the wood therefore should not be treated as proof of an excavated prehistoric harbour. [3]

Ardmore House

Nearby Ardmore House, also in Killarney townland, is an Italianate villa dated to about 1860. The National Inventory records its hipped slate roof, deep overhanging eaves, arched windows and projecting entrance porch. Surveyed as film-studio offices, it retains much of its nineteenth-century architectural character within the studio grounds. [4]
