Place & story

A ringfort reused

The National Monuments Service records a ringfort about three hundred metres east of Toomour’s centre, in Ballindoo or Doocastle. Its raised interior measures roughly thirty-five by thirty-one metres. A bank encloses it, with a ditch and outer bank surviving on part of the circuit. The survey cautions that the outer bank may be a later field boundary. [3]

The burial ground

The ringfort’s interior became a burial ground, marked on the 1838 and 1920 Ordnance Survey maps. Many graves occupy its western half; the 2020 survey judged most of these to be twentieth-century. The graveyard subsequently extended beyond the earthwork to the west and south. [2]

Fragmentary standing stones

South-west of Toomour, another record describes large upright stones beside a field fence. Archaeologists classify these remains as an unclassified megalithic tomb: their fragmentary condition prevents a more precise identification. [4]
