Lewis singled out Derry’s cultivated land; the later census records the townland within Kilcullen electoral division.
These Irish name elements are associated with this record in the Logainm glossary.
An element’s translation is a clue, rather than a complete explanation of the name. Its form and meaning depend on local history and the full Irish name.
In 1837 Samuel Lewis described the land around Derry as well cultivated and productive, contrasting it with the generally cold, wet soil of the wider Donoughmore parish. He listed Derry among the parish’s principal residences, occupied by J. B. Gibbs, and named Derry Cottage as the residence of the Reverend W. Meade. These are the occupants recorded in his account of that period. [2]
The census recorded fifty-eight inhabitants in Derry in 1901, thirty-two male and twenty-six female. Twelve of its thirteen houses were occupied and one was empty. The comparison columns give seventy-two inhabitants in 1881 and fifty-two in 1891. Listed in Donaghmore parish and East Muskerry barony, the townland belonged to Kilcullen electoral division, Clonmoyle dispensary district and Macroom Union. [3]
Census figures refer to the matched historical census area for each year. Boundaries and spellings can change over time.
