Place & story

A name below the townland level

The Ulster Historical Foundation lists The Quarter as a local name within Cullyrammer, in the adjoining parishes of Aghadowey and Desertoghill. Its entry preserves a smaller place-name that can disappear from records organised under the formal townland. [2]

Cullyramer’s changing rural economy

Historian Bill Macafee’s study of the wider Cullyramer townland compares census and valuation records from the nineteenth century. They show substantial farms alongside smaller holdings and cottiers. His discussion cites census explanations linking population decline with emigration and the stoppage of work in a beetling mill. These observations concern Cullyramer’s wider community, rather than a separately counted population for The Quarter. [3]

Keeping neighbouring mills distinct

Macafee also points out that a flax mill shown on the 1833 map lay in adjoining Boghilboy. It should not be placed within Cullyramer simply because it appears on a map used to study the townland. The distinction helps separate the local industrial landscape from individual townland boundaries. [3]
