Place & story
The former railway station
Ballymagan’s former railway station survives in the area’s protected-building record as a three-bay, two-storey structure. The Buncrana development plan also identifies a single-arch, humpbacked railway bridge near the station. Recorded separately for their architectural and historical interest, the two structures preserve evidence of a transport system that once served this part of the Buncrana hinterland. [2]
Earlier settlement in the townland
The archaeological register in the same plan identifies a ringfort and an enclosure in Ballymagan Upper and Lower. These records distinguish two earlier settlement sites from the later railway buildings and expanding modern settlement. Their inclusion in the planning inventory recognises the importance of archaeological remains alongside the more readily identifiable houses, churches and transport structures of the wider Buncrana area. [2]
A bridge lost in the 2017 floods
The August 2017 floods washed away Meenamullaghan Bridge in Ballymagan in the Illies, leaving local families cut off. Councillor Rena Donaghey later recalled asking Civil Defence personnel to deliver food to those affected. In December 2019, a report announced plans for a replacement costing about €1 million, with a contractor appointed and work scheduled for early 2020. The loss and proposed rebuilding show how a single crossing over the Crana could affect everyday access throughout the surrounding rural community. [3]
