Place & story

The older landholding families

John D'Alton's nineteenth-century account associates Carpenterstown with a branch of the Carpenter family resident here during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. He records later interests held by the Luttrell, Warren and Burnell families. His account also lists eighty acres at Carpenterstown among Thomas Luttrell's possessions in 1672. These landholding references describe an agricultural district long before its development as a Dublin suburb. [2]

Kirkpatrick Bridge over the Royal Canal

Kirkpatrick Bridge carries Coolmine Road across the Royal Canal at the boundary of Carpenterstown and Sheepmoor. Built in 1795, its single stone arch is framed by cut-stone voussoirs and a prominent keystone. Name and date plaques survive in its parapets. Fingal's bridge survey records an approximately 8.6-metre span, curved approaches and limestone coping, preserving details of the canal's late-eighteenth-century engineering. [3] [4]

Building Carpenterstown Park

Park Developments records Carpenterstown Park as its first development in Castleknock, comprising 575 homes. The company's history also recalls giving away one house in partnership with the Evening Herald during the Late Late Show. This unusually public promotion belongs to the area's transition from farmland to a large residential neighbourhood, adding a documented episode to the history of its suburban growth. [5]
