Place & story
A mill behind the factories
Edmondstown Mill comprises several three-storey mill buildings dating from about 1855. Later factory premises partly conceal them from the road. Some small-paned casement windows and other original fabric survived when the National Inventory surveyed the complex in 2002, by which time engineering and chemical businesses occupied the buildings. Water and industrial survival
The mill’s significance extends beyond its buildings to the river works that supplied them. Weirs, sluices and the former mill pond formed part of this managed water system. The National Inventory identifies Edmondstown as the surviving mill complex on the upper Owendoher and Dodder rivers, making it an important reminder of an industrial landscape otherwise much altered.
