Place & story
Residents recording forty years
In 2021, Ballymagroarty Hazelbank Community Partnership produced a booklet marking forty years of the estate. Supported by the Housing Executive, it gathered residents’ contributions about the area’s origins and development since 1980. Younger residents delivered copies to households after the pandemic delayed the anniversary project. The launch brought together early residents, community workers and housing representatives. It was a local effort to record how a new housing development became an established neighbourhood through the experiences of the people who lived there. [2]
Holy Family Church
Holy Family Church was dedicated by Bishop Edward Daly on 25 September 1983. The parish’s architectural account credits Hegarty Masterson Doherty and McCormick Building Contractors. Seating is arranged in a semicircle beneath a redwood-panelled ceiling, while the roof rises above the sanctuary. Fourteen windows incorporate Stations of the Cross designed by Desmond Kyne. The layout and artwork make the church a distinctive expression of the new parish, established as housing expanded across Ballymagroarty and neighbouring districts. [3] [4]
A school growing with the area
Holy Family Primary School opened on 1 September 1987, a date confirmed in a parliamentary answer. Its own history records that it was built for five hundred pupils but subsequently reached an enrolment of 1,198. Founding principal Paddy McLaughlin guided the school during this period of expansion. The figures describe its early growth rather than its present roll. Along with the church, the school helped establish permanent local institutions for the families settling in the surrounding estates. [5] [6]
