Place & story
Arthur Guinness at Beaumont
Arthur Guinness bought Beaumont House in 1764. The architectural inventory records the family’s ownership continuing until 1855. The eighteenth-century house has a symmetrical five-bay front, a hipped slate roof and a Doric entrance porch, with a balcony above. Later extensions changed its scale, but its original block and remaining grounds still mark the former country residence within the suburban district. This historic house is distinct from the nearby public house carrying the Beaumont House name. [2]
A home for convalescence
The Sisters of Mercy took over the house around 1900 and enlarged it for a convalescent home, which opened in 1902. Their additions included classical stone door surrounds and a niche containing a statue of Our Lady of Mercy. The adaptation connected a domestic estate with institutional nursing, preserving much of the old house’s form while adding accommodation behind and beside it. [2]
The icehouse in the grounds
An icehouse survives as another trace of Beaumont’s estate landscape. Its stone entrance leads into a passage and chamber beneath a grass-covered, corbelled rubble roof. The architectural survey relates it to the nearby house and notes its appearance on the Ordnance Survey’s third edition around 1900. Such a structure recalls the storage arrangements of a large household before electric refrigeration, even as housing and hospital buildings transformed the surrounding land. [3]
The new hospital and older institutions
The modern Beaumont Hospital opened in 1987, bringing together services from the Charitable Infirmary in Jervis Street and Saint Laurence’s, commonly called the Richmond. The Charitable Infirmary’s own trust records the transfer as a continuation of those institutions, connecting the newer suburban hospital with the history of care in the city centre. [4]
