Place & story
The town beneath the county name
Lewis locates Cavan town in Urney parish and Upper Loughtee barony. His 1837 account identifies it as a former seat of the O’Reillys and describes only vaults and foundations remaining from their castle. That is a dated observation, not a guide to what survives today. It also shows why the familiar county label is insufficient for a precise historical address: town, parish and wider territory overlap without being identical.[2]
Religious and political layers
The directory recounts successive religious communities at a foundation it calls Keadue, alongside changes to the castle and town. It then turns to the charter of incorporation granted by James I in 1610. Lewis’s quotation of the charter stresses trade, the meeting of justices and services to the Crown. The juxtaposition is revealing: the place’s older importance did not disappear when new legal and administrative structures were imposed upon it.[2]
People & connections
Percy French in Farnham Street
Percy French was born in County Roscommon, but his connection with Cavan town is substantial. The Dictionary of Irish Biography places him here while working for the Board of Works from 1883 to 1888. His duties concerned loans for agricultural improvements and inspections of the resulting work. He jokingly described himself as an inspector of drains. The county museum’s guide identifies his home as 16 Farnham Street. This was therefore a period of residence and employment, not evidence that the songwriter was a native of the town.[3][5]
Engineering, entertainment and watercolour
French performed in local amateur theatricals and organised the Kinnypottle Komicks, named after the town’s river. The group gave concerts in towns and country houses across the north midlands. Official journeys around County Cavan also gave him opportunities for landscape painting, often travelling by bicycle. Cavan County Museum preserves watercolours, photographs and letters associated with him. The museum is at Ballyjamesduff, a separate place also celebrated in one of his songs. French’s working years connect Cavan town with an unusually varied career encompassing engineering, music, performance and visual art.[3][4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
