Place & story

At Roscommon’s first GAA convention

Callow was among the clubs represented at Roscommon’s first county GAA convention, held in Boyle on 23 January 1889. The county board’s history places it alongside clubs from Ballyfarnon, Cootehall, Elphin and other districts. Jasper Tully was proposed as president, with James Lindsay as treasurer and G. W. Tully as secretary. Callow’s presence records organised sporting activity here during the association’s early expansion through the county. [2]

People & connections

A teacher in the national school

The national education return of 31 March 1905 names Sarah Beirne as principal of Callow Girls’ School, with Frenchpark as its postal town. A former pupil of the school, she trained at Our Lady of Mercy in Baggot Street, Dublin, before returning to teach. [3]

Land purchase raised in Parliament

On 6 April 1905, the MP Mr Hayden asked whether untenanted land on the Longfield estate at Callow, near Frenchpark, had been offered to the Congested Districts Board. He sought progress before it might be let for summer grazing. Chief Secretary Walter Long answered that no offer had been made. The exchange documents local concern about access to estate land, while also establishing that the proposed purchase had not reached that first stage at the time. [4]
