Place & story

Saint James’s Church

Saint James’s Church opened and was blessed on 21 October 1877, replacing a small thatched building that had also accommodated a school. Its Caen-stone and marble altar was consecrated by Bishop McCormack in June 1884. The architectural inventory records a cruciform church with a limestone bellcote above its entrance. The sequence connects a new permanent parish building with the earlier, more modest provision for both worship and learning. [2] [3]

Teaching in church and barn

Scoil Íosa’s school history draws on an 1826 inquiry to describe earlier education in the parish. Patrick Gallagher taught thirty-eight children in Carracastle’s church, while other teachers worked in barns or a small hut at Lavey, Barroe and Rooskey. Pupils’ payments supported the teachers. The first purpose-built national school in the parish opened at Cloonfane in 1844, followed by Tonroe in 1861 and several further schools during the nineteenth century. [4]

The opening of Scoil Íosa

The scattered school network later contracted through amalgamation. In 1979 Cloonfane joined Tonroe as an initial step towards centralising provision at the Carracastle end of the parish. Scoil Íosa opened in 1982, replacing Cloonfane, Tonroe and Palmfield. Its own history preserves the names and opening dates of the predecessor schools, recording how a shared central institution emerged from the older network serving individual rural communities. [4]
