People & connections

A drover's household

Peggy Cadden's Sweeney family history, assembled from named relatives' accounts, places Jack Sweeney and his wife Honor Berry in George Hope's house at Carrowbeg (Fergus). Jack worked as Hope's drover. Family recollection dates his sudden death at a Mullingar roadside inn to about 1860. The account describes Hope accommodating the widow and children in a converted outbuilding, followed by their move to Knockloughra. These details survive through family testimony, rather than a contemporary account of the death. [2]

Disturbed traces of an earlier site

Archaeological testing for the N59 road project in 2013 found scattered burnt stone in Carrowbeg (Fergus). Richard F. Gillespie identified material resembling a disturbed fulacht fiadh mound, but found no remains surviving in their original position. The evidence suggests a former site within or close to the tested area; the report does not establish its date or original extent. [3]
