Place & story

From cottages to a terrace

The historic-building survey contrasts single-storey properties recorded here in the 1830s with the later two-storey terrace. It tentatively dates the house at number 9 to around 1840 and the public house at number 11 to the later 1860s. Its account cautions that the valuation plan contains later annotations, so the building sequence is not precisely established. [2]

The Mason family’s block

The Mason family acquired the block around 1900, when the village post office occupied part of the pub building. A doorway linked the house with the pub until around 1980. Number 9’s frontage follows the bend of the street, while the slightly taller public house occupies the northern end: a compact grouping of domestic, commercial and postal space. [2]
