Place & story
Crossing the Avonbeg
Ballinaclash Bridge carries the road over the Avonbeg at a junction in the village. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage dates its three arches to about 1760. Rubble masonry forms the main structure and parapets, with carefully dressed stone blocks around the arches. Squared recesses in the parapets provide pedestrian refuges. These small practical details remain part of the character of a crossing built long before modern road traffic.[2]
A school becomes a community hall
Ballinaclash Community Hall began as a primary school in 1953 and closed as a school in 1971. The Community Association formed in 1975 and gave the building a new role. Its own history recalls a land-purchase campaign led by Fred Phelan in 1976, supported by local volunteers and fundraising which included a car raffle. Later renovations, assisted by Wicklow County Council, continued the building’s use for social gatherings, classes and community activities.[3]

Ballinaclash in Synge’s drama
J. M. Synge places Ballinaclash within the travelling world of The Tinker’s Wedding. In the first act, Sarah Casey looks forward to seeing Jaunting Jim there after his successful sale of a foal at Wicklow’s horse fair. The reference connects the village with the play’s imagined network of roads, fairs and encounters. It is a literary association, rather than a record of an actual meeting or a precise statement that the entire play takes place here.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
