Place & story

Making a public park

Poppintree Park’s redevelopment involved the construction of an eleven-hectare public park for Ballymun Regeneration Ltd, completed in August 2010. The contractor’s record describes a substantial reshaping of the ground, with ponds and water-attenuation areas, retaining structures and new drainage. Three limestone-paved entrance plazas, a cantilevered pond walkway, playground equipment and paths formed part of the same project, combining public recreation with the engineering of a new park landscape. [2]

A community youth project

Poppintree Youth Project began in April 2007 when the Ballymun Animal Care Association youth section and the Columban Youth Project joined together. Both had already worked locally for more than fifteen years, initially using flats in Balcurris and later basements on Balbutcher Lane. During Ballymun’s regeneration the new organisation negotiated for a dedicated youth centre, moving into its purpose-built premises in October 2009 behind the community and sports centre complex. [3]

Young people shaping their surroundings

A landscape workshop underway in 2012 gave young people a direct role in designing community space through the youth project’s Conflict Resolution Action Program. Participants aged seventeen to twenty worked with a scale sand model and boards showing possible features, voting on their preferences before the designer prepared a plan. The accompanying build workshop turned those decisions into work on previously abandoned ground; the designer’s April 2012 account records an ongoing first phase. [4]
