Place & story
Factories become a supermarket
The Foxrock Local History Club’s contribution to the Our Own Place photographic project records Dunnes Stores opening a food and textile supermarket in two former factories at Cornelscourt in 1966. Later additions connected the premises with a toys-and-hardware unit. A subsequent replacement supermarket was built in the original car park while trading continued during an eight-month construction programme. The 1994 project record names the Ambrose Kelly Group as designer and Noonan Construction as builder. [2]
Cornelscourt House
Cornelscourt House, formerly Saint Margaret’s, was standing by 1866. The architectural inventory records its sale in 1917, vacancy in 2004 and restoration in 2008. Its compact, irregular plan combines a projecting central section with steep gables and a pointed doorway approached by granite steps. The restored house retains historic joinery, fireplaces and decorative plasterwork, preserving features from an earlier residential landscape beside Stillorgan Road. [3]
