Place & story
Along the old road
Cullahill stands on the R639, southwest of Durrow. The county council describes a village spreading onto adjoining local roads, with stone boundary walls on its northwestern approach. Its community hall, shops and public house form the centre. The church and primary school lie beyond the settlement boundary to the northwest. [2]
The castle remains
Cullahill Castle retains much of its eastern and southern sides, although its northern side has largely disappeared. A field visit recorded a surviving ground-floor barrel vault, a prominent chimney on the east wall and a polygonal enclosing bawn. A sheela-na-gig is set high on the east wall. The ruined chapel stands west of the tower. [3]
