Place & story
Homes on former farmland
Dublin Corporation developed Darndale on farmland north of Coolock during the 1970s. For families leaving crowded inner-city accommodation or flats in Ballymun, the estate offered the prospect of gardens and more space at home. Its roughly nine hundred dwellings were grouped into five areas with flower names: Buttercup, Marigold, Primrose, Snowdrop and Tulip. These names became part of the everyday geography of a community made up largely of young families. [2] [4]
Schools before the houses
The parish’s historical account dates the community hall and two national schools to 1972, placing shared facilities at the beginning of Darndale’s development. Jim Butler, an Oblate priest, became its first parish priest as the new community separated from Coolock. The Sisters of the Holy Family of Bordeaux established a foundation here in 1976, adding another institution to the growing estate. [3]
A church becomes a community space
Archbishop Dermot Ryan opened and blessed the Church of Our Lady Immaculate in 1982. The building later acquired an additional role: in 1998, part of the church was partitioned to create the Newlife Centre. The parish records that the converted section provided a meeting and support space for families, older people and young people, adapting the building to activities beyond worship. [3]
Sharing fifty years of memories
A memory-sharing event at Darndale Belcamp Village Centre marked the estate’s fiftieth anniversary in 2025. Dublin City Council’s historian-in-residence Katie Blackwood helped residents recall their experiences of living here. The gathering made local testimony central to the anniversary, bringing accounts of the estate’s beginnings and later changes into a shared public setting. [4]
