Place & story

The ringfort

The National Monuments Service records a rath at Drummacool, SL027-160001, on a low rocky rise. Its surviving form is a raised oval area about 25 metres by 20 metres, bounded by a scarp with large stone slabs visible at intervals. The survey describes the fort as levelled and overgrown, rather than an intact embanked enclosure. [2]

The souterrain

Within the rath’s south-western quarter, record SL027-160002 identifies a souterrain. The recorded opening had collapsed, while large limestone lintels covered the chamber or passage beyond. The inventory describes it as inaccessible. Neither record establishes an individual builder, an excavated date or a particular episode from the fort’s history. [3]
