Place & story
St Monica’s church
Edenmore parish was formed from Raheny and Coolock in 1966. St Monica’s was built that year as a temporary church. Rather than being replaced immediately, the building remained in use and underwent a comprehensive refurbishment in 1998, when a pastoral centre was incorporated. [2]
From Edenmore Gaels to St Monica’s
Des O’Neill helped establish Edenmore Gaels in 1964. Interviewed in 2016, he remembered neighbours forming a committee and the difficulty of finding somewhere to play. The club later adopted the parish name, St Monica’s. O’Neill and Terry Monaghan approached the parish priest about using land near the church, and erected goalposts there. Their voluntary work helped give the club a lasting home. [3]
