Place & story

Two periods in one churchyard

Aglish's former Church of Ireland church was built in 1813 on a hillock beside the remains of a medieval church. The buildings share a graveyard with monuments from several centuries. The later church has a three-stage western tower with stone battlements and pinnacles. Its architectural survey records an unusual range of window forms, including timber tracery and metal lattice casements, together with an interior gallery. [2]

The glebe across the field

Across the field southeast of the church stands its former glebe house, built in 1816 with Board of First Fruits support. The house has two storeys over a half-basement, a central porch and small-paned sash windows. The inventory records surviving stairs and panelled doors, as well as a former stable and carriage-house range. Together, house and church show the domestic and institutional footprint of the early nineteenth-century parish. [3]

Saint Michael’s stonework

Saint Michael the Archangel's Catholic church, built in 1893, replaced an earlier church farther west in the village. Its cross-shaped plan, corner tower and short spire make it a conspicuous landmark among Aglish's smaller buildings. Contrasts between rough-faced limestone walls and more finely dressed stone around the porch and upper tower give its exterior texture. Triple lancet windows and chancel stained glass add another layer of craftsmanship. [4]
