Place & story

A small town on the mail road

In 1837 Samuel Lewis described Lurgangreen as a post town on the Belfast mail road, with forty-one houses and 224 inhabitants. It stood beside the River Fane and adjoined Clermont Park, then the seat of Thomas Fortescue. A constabulary force was stationed there, and fairs took place on 25 July and 11 November. The account presents a small settlement serving both passing traffic and its agricultural neighbourhood. [2]

A distinctive mark on letters

A specialist account of Irish postal mileage marks illustrates an undated circular Lurgangreen handstamp carrying the number thirty-seven. The number indicated its postal distance from Dublin, under the system in which distance helped determine the charge for a letter. The account identifies Lurgangreen and Castlebellingham as the two towns known to have used this particular circular, undated format, making the small post town distinctive to collectors. [3]

Dundugan at Commons

At Commons, west of Lurgangreen, the earthwork known as Dundugan occupies the southern bank of the Fane. The Ask About Ireland heritage account describes a bell barrow with two surrounding banks and ditches, about twenty metres across. Thomas Wright recorded it in his 1748 Louthiana, already noting damage to its central mound. The site preserves an earlier burial landscape beside the later road settlement. [4]
