Place & story

The Galway Bay Fault

A joint Geological Survey of Ireland and Marine Institute survey aboard the research vessel Celtic Voyager confirmed the position of the Galway Bay Fault in the North Sound. The fault runs northwest to southeast between the Gorumna–Lettermullan islands and Aran, marking the limit of the granite landscape. The survey also revealed a parallel ridge off Rossaveel and helped distinguish granite from limestone beneath the bay, extending geological mapping beyond the visible island shores. [2]
