Place & story
Saint James and the parish
Saint James's Church stands in Robinstown, within Glenmore village. Local historian Daniel Dowling dates it to 1813, replacing a nearby predecessor. The church thus predates the creation of Glenmore as a separate parish in 1846, when Edward Walsh, becoming Bishop of Ossory, divided it from Slieverue and Ferrybank. The building and parish boundary belong to different stages of local religious organisation. [2]
Farmers form a creamery
Glenmore Co-operative Creamery registered in April 1905 and first received milk that September. Its initial role was to collect milk and send cream to Mullinavat for churning. Shareholders bought shares according to their cow numbers. A contemporary annual report, examined by Glenmore History, records payment by tested butterfat content, showing how co-operation changed both marketing and the measurement of local milk production. [3]
Bill Walsh brings the films
Before television, Bill Walsh ran weekly film screenings at J.K. Walsh's premises in the village. A family account preserved by Glenmore History recalls westerns and historical epics, new seating in 1961, and the roof's collapse under snow during the winter of 1962–63. Screenings temporarily moved to the old school. Walsh also took films to neighbouring villages and to people unable to leave their homes. [4]
