Place & story
The island in Green Lough
Inishrush’s crannóg survives as a small wooded feature within the largely drained Green Lough. Nineteenth-century observers described a mound of clay and gravel surrounded by oak posts carrying horizontal timbers. The Department for Communities records that much of the structure was dismantled during that century, after drainage of the lough before 1860. Its reported association with Brian Carrach O’Neill’s seventeenth-century base remains an historical belief, rather than a securely demonstrated identification. [2]
The chapel near the village
Frederick Hervey, the Earl Bishop of Derry, paid for a church at Tyanee near Inishrush in 1775. The Irish Architectural Archive records its replacement in 1815–16 by a church with a three-storey belfry, three windows on its southern side and one at the east. The archive treats Michael Shanahan’s involvement in the earlier building as a scholarly attribution; it leaves the architect of the replacement unidentified. [3]
