Place & story
The scale of Richmond Barracks
The complex later occupied by the Garda College began as Richmond Barracks in the early nineteenth century, on land owned by Sir John Craven Carden. A Garda historical study describes a major military establishment with accommodation, medical facilities and two large squares. Ensign Harry Loft, stationed there during the Famine in 1847, contrasted the imposing barracks with his much less favourable impression of the town. The establishment brought employment and recruits to Templemore while connecting it to the wider movements of British army regiments.[2]
Folklore & tradition
The reported miracles of 1920
In August 1920, claims of apparitions and bleeding statues associated with teenager James Walsh brought pilgrims to Templemore and nearby Curraheen. Historian John Reynolds documents reported cures alongside scepticism and clerical caution. His study also examines the disruption to IRA activity and later accounts alleging mechanical trickery. One witness recalled Michael Collins finding clockwork inside a statue. These are historical records of belief, investigation and competing testimony during the War of Independence; the reported supernatural events and cures are not established facts.[3]
The Templemore Special
Garda recruit training moved from Dublin to Templemore on 14 February 1964. A specially chartered train brought 190 recruits and instructional staff from Kingsbridge station, now Heuston. At Templemore, the newly formed Thomas McDonagh Pipe Band led their march to the training centre. An advance party had arrived earlier to prepare beds, offices and classrooms, staying in the Templemore Arms while catering facilities were completed. The formal opening followed on 21 February. The journey marks a precise change in the old military site's role, from barracks to national police training centre.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
