Place & story

Buildings in the village

A Historic Environment Division survey records older buildings in Purdysburn village that were originally four dwellings and later combined into two. Their original cast-iron windows with diamond-shaped panes survived the alterations noted in 2013. The same record describes the Gospel Hall as a single-storey corrugated building at the end of the village. These modest structures belong to the settlement, distinct from the larger hospital complex. [2]

The neighbouring country house

Research by Terence Reeves-Smyth and Philip Smith traces Purdysburn House to a document of 1712, associating it with merchant James Willson. His son Hill Willson undertook further building and garden improvements. The house stood in Ballydollaghan, north of the village in Ballycowan. It was extensively remodelled during the nineteenth century and demolished in August 1965, leaving other estate structures and garden remains. [3]

A formal garden survives

The researchers date the estate’s geometric garden to approximately 1735–1745. Brick-lined walls enclosed a layout of paths radiating from a central point, a garden form known as a patte d’oie. A long central pond was added during nineteenth-century alterations. Their 2015 study records an overgrown survival of the historic layout, while explaining that the later nickname Union Jack Garden misrepresents its original design. [3]
