Place & story

Building an Irish-language television centre

The new Teilifís na Gaeilge studios at Baile na hAbhann were officially opened by Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht Michael D. Higgins shortly before broadcasting began in October 1996. RTÉ’s contemporary news report put the studio cost at £2 million. The new service introduced presenters including Gillian Ní Cheallaigh and Gráinne Seoige, with Michael Lally heading its news operation. Establishing the studios in the Connemara Gaeltacht gave the community a direct role in national television production. [2]

The opening night

TnaG began transmitting on 31 October 1996. The opening-night celebrations at Baile na hAbhann included a message from President Mary Robinson, followed by fireworks, music and dance. RTÉ’s archive preserves both scenes from the launch and a Morning Ireland report broadcast the following day, recording enthusiasm alongside arguments about the cost of the new channel. The event marked the beginning of a dedicated Irish-language television service whose headquarters remain in Baile na hAbhann. [3] [5]

The arrival of Nuacht RTÉ

In July 2009, RTÉ’s Irish-language television news operation moved from Donnybrook to the TG4 studios at Baile na hAbhann. Contemporary coverage described a €3 million revamp and a combined staff of forty-two preparing the RTÉ and TG4 news services. Siún Nic Gearailt returned to presenting from Connemara after working in Dublin. The move expanded the studios’ national broadcasting role, while the RTÉ radio news operation remained based in Dublin. [4]
