Place & story

A remembered mission in 1940

A letter by William Fleming, reproduced in the Irish Evangelistic Band’s eightieth-anniversary magazine, recalls Bob Graham and Edmund Sandford conducting a mission in a hall at Stonewall in March 1940. Fleming describes this as the occasion of his own religious conversion. His personal recollection supplies a dated account of evangelical activity here, without establishing that the hall used then was the present building. [2]

Stonewall Gospel Hall

Stonewall Gospel Hall describes itself as an independent meeting place for Christians, with no denominational affiliation. Its website gives an establishment date of 1890 and describes meetings centred on preaching, Bible reading and study. That date is the congregation’s own account of its origins; it does not by itself date the surviving building. [3]

Workspace on the Virginia Road

In a 2015 interview, Bailieborough Development Association chairman Peadar Reynolds described the association’s enterprise centre at Stonewall, beside the Virginia Road. Its workspace units accommodated small and medium businesses employing fifteen people at that time. The centre formed part of the association’s wider programme of community facilities and local employment. [4]
