Place & story

The southern gate lodge

The southern entrance to Grangecon demesne has a three-bay gate lodge dated to about 1875 by the National Inventory. Granite quoins frame rendered walls, while timber brackets support the projecting roof. Heraldic panels decorate the side walls. The adjoining entrance retains decorative cast-iron gates and railings. [2]

A modest station

The Eiretrains photographic account records a single platform and siding at Grangecon, with neither goods shed nor signal cabin. A concrete station building replaced the wooden and corrugated-iron structure destroyed during the Civil War in 1922. The account documents the later building’s conversion to stables, alongside surviving railway cottages and a road bridge. [3]
