Place & story

Remembering the school’s first 125 years

Ballinagree National School marked its 125th anniversary in June 2023, inviting former pupils and the wider community to Mass and a gathering at the school. A timeline displayed on the building presented its history. Pupils also designed a new crest, which former pupil Pat O'Sullivan converted into digital form. The design placed the old school building among symbols of learning, friendship, sport and the local countryside. [2]

The beginnings of the vintage society

Ballinagree Vintage Vehicle Society began with a meeting in the Ploughman Bar in October 2002. Its first committee included chairman John Casey, secretary Patrick Twomey and treasurer Michael Creedon. According to secretary Joanne O'Riordan's twentieth-anniversary account, the first field day took place on 17 August 2003 in Patrick Lehane's field, later occupied by Carrig Rua Estate. The event subsequently moved to another field as the society established its annual programme. [3]

People & connections

A ceremonial mayor and charitable runs

The vintage society's celebrations extended beyond machinery displays. Paddy O'Sullivan became its first ceremonial Lord Mayor of Ballinagree in 2004, beginning a sequence of annual appointments. Saint Patrick's Day parades and car and tractor runs became further parts of its calendar. O'Riordan's account describes these runs as supporting charities, connecting enthusiasm for older vehicles with fundraising and village gatherings rather than limiting the society to the preservation of objects.
