Place & story

Tully Castle along the shore

A few miles from Blaney, Tully Castle preserves a stark episode in the history of Lower Lough Erne. The Department for Communities identifies it as a fortified residence and enclosed bawn built for Sir John Hume. In its account, Rory Maguire’s forces attacked on Christmas Eve 1641, burning the house and massacring its inhabitants. The building was never occupied again. The monument stands at Tully Point, outside Blaney itself; a restored farmhouse houses an exhibition about its history. [2] [4]

Woodland above Lower Lough Erne

Nearby Ely Lodge Forest extends from the lough shore towards the Carrickreagh viewpoint. The Forest Service describes a mixture of broadleaved and coniferous woodland, including mature European larch. Paths follow the water and climb to views over the lough. The official Geopark directory places both this forest and Tully Castle a short journey from Blaney, linking the locality to a wider shore landscape rather than identifying either attraction as a building within the village.
