Place & story
A bridge from the Achill railway
A single-arched railway bridge in Tonregee West survives from the Achill extension opened in 1895. Sandstone masonry gives the small stream crossing a carefully finished appearance, with a rounded arch, sloping abutments and prominent coping stones. The architectural inventory identifies it as part of the Midland Great Western Railway’s extension towards Achill. Although modest in scale, the bridge preserves physical evidence of the line’s engineering within the village’s surroundings. [2]
Road and Greenway improvements
Mayo County Council’s 2014 annual report records the realignment of a kilometre of the R 319 at Tonragee. The project included a walking and cycling lane and opened to traffic that September. The council also identified the completed Tonragee works among improvements to the Great Western Greenway, connecting changes in the main road with the development of the area’s recreational route. [3]
A growing village school
New playground, access and parking facilities at Tonragee National School were officially opened in May 2018. The contemporary report records growth from seventeen pupils in 1997 to fifty-four in 2018, alongside a change from two to three teachers. Local builders contributed voluntary work and land was donated for the project. The improvements addressed the practical difficulties of a school beside a busy regional road while accommodating its larger community. [4]
