Place & story

A church with notable sculpture

The Church of the Assumption and Saint Malachy was built in 1832 with financial support from John Maher of Ballinkeele. Its rectangular form and pointed windows belong to the Georgian Gothic tradition. The architectural inventory records later improvements in 1893 and a dedication in 1900. Inside, a Pietà by John Hogan and stained glass signed by Franz Mayer and Company in 1911 give the small village church a wider artistic connection. [2]

A grain store becomes a school

The national school's own history dates its stone building to 1847, when it served as a grain store. Conversion created a two-room school. A prefabricated classroom in the 1980s and two permanent classrooms added in 1994 mark later stages of expansion. The change from agricultural storage to teaching links the village's working buildings with the development of local education. [3]

An earlier church lost in 1798

The parish records an earlier Ballymurn church built in 1774 and burned on 21 June 1798, the day of the battle of Vinegar Hill. The present building therefore represents a later replacement rather than the survival of that eighteenth-century chapel. The parish also identifies the Hogan sculpture as a memorial to Margaret Maher of nearby Ballinkeele, who died in 1838. [4]
