Place & story

The Church of the Assumption

The Church of the Assumption at Smithstown gives Ballinlough a striking Gothic landmark. Built around 1830, it has a cruciform plan and an entrance framed by two projecting towers. Battlements run across the entrance gable, while pinnacles rise from the towers. Limestone dressings emphasise the pointed windows and the front of the church. Porches, a sacristy and the adjoining graveyard complete a building whose silhouette remains an important part of the village. [2]

A resting place remembered

A restored postman’s hut was among the projects presented when Ballinlough represented Meath in the 2009 Pride of Place competition. The local committee described it as an early twentieth-century resting spot for the postman and other travellers. Established in 2005, the group had also developed a village garden, restored and relocated the water pump, and planted native trees. Its work linked small surviving features of everyday life with improvements around the community hall. [3]

Football’s climbs through the grades

Ballinlough GAA has been affiliated to the Meath county committee since 1938 and first reached senior status in 1954. Later setbacks brought the club back to junior football, but a strong run began in 1988 with victory over Carnaross in the junior championship final. League promotion followed, and in 1991 Ballinlough defeated Saint Patrick’s to win the intermediate championship and return to senior football. Division One league titles in 1997 and 1999 marked further successes. [4]
