Place & story
Hargrave’s replacement house
The Moutray family’s first house at Favor Royal dated from 1670. An accidental fire destroyed it in 1823, prompting Captain John Corry Moutray to commission architect John Hargrave to design a replacement. Completed in 1825, the new house adopted a Tudor manorial character. Hargrave’s surviving plans, held by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, document its principal rooms and elevations. [2]
An estate recorded in maps and photographs
The official survey traces the demesne through nineteenth-century maps, which record changing drives, bridges and a former lakeside boathouse. A Tudor-style gate lodge and battlemented bridge parapets continued the architectural theme beyond the main house. Family photographs and a 1976 contents-sale catalogue provide further evidence of the furnished rooms and estate features before dispersal. [2]
