The patronage that launched Carolan
Turlough Carolan's family moved to Ballyfarnon in 1684, when his father John took employment with the MacDermott Roe family of Alderford. After smallpox left Turlough blind, Mrs MacDermott Roe arranged his apprenticeship to a harper. Around 1691 he began travelling with a horse, guide and financial assistance supplied by his patron. Ballyfarnon therefore played a formative role in his career: it was the place where family employment led to education, musical training and the support needed to become an itinerant composer.[2]
A weekly market and eight annual fairs
In 1837 Samuel Lewis recorded 150 inhabitants at Ballyfarnon. A customary weekly market had been established, and eight fairs ran through the year, from February to December. The village had both a constabulary force and a revenue station, while its school taught about ninety boys and forty girls. Lewis expected a proposed mail-coach road from Carrick-on-Shannon to Sligo to increase Ballyfarnon's importance. His description captures a small settlement whose prospects depended on both its agricultural gatherings and its position on an improving transport route.[3]
Alderford and the Kilronan burial ground
Carolan returned to Alderford, where he died in 1738. Kilronan parish records his burial in the MacDermott Roe family vault at Kilronan cemetery. The same family's wider religious connections included Thomas MacDermott Roe, who became bishop of Ardagh in 1747. These associations place Alderford within networks of patronage, music and church life extending beyond Ballyfarnon itself. The cemetery belongs to the wider parish landscape, distinct from the later village church.[5]
St Patrick's, dedicated in 1889
Ballyfarnon's St Patrick's Church was built during the 1880s and dedicated by Bishop Woodlock in March 1889. The parish's own account identifies it as one of the three churches serving Kilronan, alongside Keadue and Arigna. The dedication provides a clear date for the building that became the local Catholic congregation's centre, while the older Alderford and cemetery connections preserve a different phase of the district's religious history.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
