Place & story
A house organised around a loggia
The architectural inventory dates Bert House to around 1780 and records an H-shaped plan. Its three-storey entrance front has projecting ends and a recessed centre, with an open, columned loggia along the ground floor. Railings above the loggia and decorative render panels give the broad façade an elaborate finish. [2]
A contrasting garden front
On the southern garden side, a projecting glazed porch has an ogee-shaped domed roof. The survey recorded timber sash windows, slate roofing and extensive decorative render among the surviving early features. Bert’s hillside grounds overlook the River Barrow and Grand Canal, placing this large residence within the waterway landscape of Kilberry parish. [2]
