Place & story

A name within the townland

The Northern Ireland Place-Name Project’s 2007 survey identifies Rockstown as a minor name within Creggandevesky townland. It appears in the entry for Rockstown Road, preserving a local designation beneath the level of the townland name. [2]

The court tomb in the wider townland

Creggandevesky’s court tomb was threatened by agricultural reclamation before excavation between 1979 and 1982 exposed its well-preserved structure. A forecourt leads into three burial chambers beneath a cairn built from granite boulders. The entrance retains an exceptionally large lintel, while surviving roof stones show how the chambers were covered. [3]

Evidence of burial and later activity

Excavators recovered cremated human remains, flint tools and Neolithic pottery. The Department for Communities describes remains representing at least 21 people and evidence of later Bronze Age activity. These finds concern the tomb in Creggandevesky, rather than a documented prehistoric settlement specifically called Rockstown. [3]
